Monitoring hydrology is an essential part of studying an ecosystem such as the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Since 1977, bimonthly samples have been taken from five stations in the bay. These samples provide important information on physical characteristics (temperature, oxygen, salinity), nutrients (NH4, NO3, NO2, SiO3, PO4) and particulate matter composition (seston, chlorophyll a and pheophytin). |

The paper aims at presenting an innovative methodology, called M-GS (M-GeoStatistics), which is fully dedicated to the local optimization of parameters involved in variogram-based models. M-GS considers the structural and computational parameters as a set of dependant parameters to be spatially optimized. The optimization process, which may be guided by objective or subjective criteria, is carried out during a M-structural analysis phase that leads to a set of spatially variable structural and computational parameters. The methodology is applied for bathymetry mapping. The availability of accurate seafloor estimates is essential for numerous oceanographic projects, including hydrographic, oceanographic and biological models, sedimentary processes, etc.... |

Shellfish areas usually receive a large number of introduced species. During the present project, we specially focused on 4 marine benthic molluscs introduced in shellfish areas along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France: the gastropods Crepidula fornicata, Ocinebrellus inornatus and Cyclope neritea, and the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum. Our study was conducted according to three main axes: (i) the characterization of introduction and expansion patterns of species within their newly colonized area. In the three invasive gastropods C. fornnicata, C. neritea and 0. inornatus, a high level of genetic diversity was detected in the French populations which indicated a complex process of introduction (with multiple population sources or secondary... |

In Marennes-Oléron, Héral (1986) described the relationship between the annual production and the oysters' biomass over a century. His conclusion is that the drop in the growth of oysters was caused by an "overstorage" considering the trophic capacity of the basin. Moreover, the large intertidal spaces, though providing a great opportunity for mollusc culture, suffer from a large bio-deposition (Sornin 1983) which tends to intensify the sedimentation of the basin. The spatial management of oyster culture could be a key factor for its long-term development. In collaboration with the French Marine Affairs, in charge of the cadastral management, the IFREMER has developed a geographical information system enabling the gathering under the same geographic... |

Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or... |

Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild... |

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

The cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas was first introduced in France in 1967 [13]. On the Atlantic coast, the Marennes Oléron Bay (Figure 1) is the first European oyster culture basin with a cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) stock of 110,000 tons and an annual output of 30,000 to 40,000 tons. The Ronce oyster bank, located at the south of the bay (Figure 1), is made of 1,600 concessions spread out over 175 ha. It produces 8,000 to 10,000 tons of cupped oysters each year. In Japan, Crassostrea gigas has been cultivated for more than 1,000 years (Farley, 1992). Since the beginning of the 1960's, oyster mortality has multiplied throughout the world (Imaï et al., 1965; Sinderman, 1976; Mackin, 1961; Beattie et al, 1980). In the 60's and 70's, Japan and the west... |
